Overview
The scope of this object was to create a short film for our final project in sophomore video class. We had to create a short film that had to be 3-5 mins long. We had to come up with our own script and make it into a short film. We found actors to play the roles and had to make time on a separate day to film the whole movie. We had some troubleshooting we had to get around but in the end it turned into an amazing short film.
Process
The process of making this film was very tedious. the first thing we had to do was make a story board and script. We had problems along the way when people weren't here or forgot something at home but we later got the script put together and then the the story board soon after. After the story board and script was done we had to make it come alive. Trey was one of our actors but we also got one from outside of class. I thought they both did very well and worked hard to make this short film possible. On a Sunday we took 4 hours to film at Ernie Miller Nature Park. We ran into troubles but overcame them. We went deep into the woods to find good places to film and good areas for them to have room in order to act. After we got done with the filming we took all of our films back into the class and started editing. The editing process took a week or more. The long process was caused by the fact that we have 200 some odd clips. We had to go through every clip and decide wether or not the clip would fit.
Learning experience
Something that i learned early on in this project is to be prepared. If you are not prepared then you will run into a lot of troubles down the rode. So be prepared and be ready to be thrown into situations you were not prepared for.
Technically
We had a couple problems with our technology. The first problem we had was the first day of filming our SD card became full. We had to run home and get a computer to get rid of the unneeded clips. When we were filming the Scientist scene we forgot about audio and so we had no audio which then we had to re film.
Professionally
Something i learned about professionally is that you need to have a group of people that you enjoy talking to. If you don't get along and don't see eye to eye then you will have conflicts with your film that could make it go down hill. Luckily I had a good team that I liked talking to and enjoyed their company.
Something Different
Something i would do different is to be prepared. I wish we would have brought a couple more SD cards so we knew that we wouldn't have to go get another one. Something else that i wish we would have done different is talking about the editing portion. If we knew more about the main concept and what we were trying to get a crossed i think i could have had a better edited film.
Something The Same
I like how many shots we got. The variety of shots made it easier to edit the film and to have a lot of cool angles which was needed in this film. We also did good with communicating when filming. We told each other we the shot needed to be more focused or when we needed to change the angle.
Drawing something from the experience
Something i drew from this experience was having a good group to work with and good actors. Our actors made the film worth watching. I think they did better than i excepted and made the film make sense. The Director Trey did a good job with voice overs which made the film flow so much better.
Conclusions
Overall i loved making this film. It was fun working with the people i got to work with and i enjoyed filming. My role in this short film was to film and tell the actors how to look. I really enjoyed how well we all got a long and the way it turned out. To be honest at the beginning i really had no idea what the film was about and how we were going to even produce the film. Once we got through the script writing i got the idea and really enjoyed the story line. I can't wait to make another film next year and hope those are able to add up to this film.
